Hello! May&FJ are back with our food review today! Our friends and us decided to head out one day to Sunset Way for a food excursion, however we went at a timing where many restaurants and cafes turned us down due to external events or resting period. After feeling sorry for ourselves and hungry, May suggested Choupinette where we heard about good all day's breakfast! So we chugged ourselves down there at that odd hour to grab some lunch! After all that walking and stuffs, you bet we were hungry!

Choupinette is a  tiny little French restaurant that is situated at the corner. They have these set lunches that looks rather worth it, but we were after the all day breakfast, so we decided to skip that. We ordered an Eggs Royale set ($23), a Tristen Set ($21), and a Le Geo-Burger ($20). The bill totaled to about $74.90, since there are 4 of us, we each paid about $18.70. We have included their menu here.

Eggs Royale Set:

  • Comes with one cold drink and one hot drink.
  • The bread is crispy.
  • They give you a generous portion of smoked salmon.
  • The Hollandaise sauce was not too creamy.
  • The eggs were poached to a good extent, so we were contented customers!

Tristen Set:
  • Comes with one cold drink and one hot drink too.
  • To be honest, at first look, the food looks kinda pathetic. The plate was too big and the food was too tiny. It made us feel that this seemed like a meal not worth the money paid for.
  • Coming back to the good side of this dish, the Saute Mushrooms were very flavorful. (They could have given more of it! D' Good gave so much more at a cheaper price!)
  • The eggs were well poached.
  • The baked tomato was good.

Le Geo-Burger:

  • We requested for the patty to be "well done" but it was not well done at all -.- It was all too too hard for everyone.
  • The fries comes in a huge ass amount that fed 4 people to their satisfaction.
  • The salad has this slight sourish sauce that tasted good.

Note:
  • They have timings for the Brunch Menu
  • Lunch sets are served till 7pm.
  • They are not opened on Mondays.
 (Hot Chocolate)
 (Chamomile Tea)
(Apple Juice and Orange Juice)

Overall, we feel that the All day breakfast sets are worth the ordering, as for the meals, maybe not? But $18.70/ person for food and drinks to feed 4 people would seem rather worth it!

That's all for now! We'll come back with more food reviews for you all! Thank you for keeping a look out on our space! Do keep that love going! We love you all <3

(We're so cute ^^ Friends are hidden gems )

TIONG BAHRU BAKERY

Location: 56 Eng Hoon Street #01-70 Singapore 160056
How to get there: Tiong Bahru Mrt Station. It's near Tiong Bahru Market. Right next to Orange Thimble.
Opening Hours: 0800am - 2000pm Daily
Contact: 6220 3430

HELLO EVERBODAY~It's right smack at mid week today!!! Hopefully you peeps are surviving! Here's a new food post to make you drool and start making plans to visit Tiong Bahru Bakery during the weekends.

I'm sure many of you have heard of Tiong Bahru Bakery. Honestly, Tiong Bahru Bakery is an expensive affair, with a traditional name but a fusion of French, English and Western bakes and drinks. Nothing in there is priced below $3. I visited this bakery on Wednesday morning with a friend of mine thinking that there wouldn't be much of a crowd as people would have started working and school goers are well, still in school with an exception of me thanks to my timetable. But I was proven wrong. I reached there at about 10ish to find the bakery packed! Packed with people from all around the world! (I was trying to catch the accents, but I'm lousy with them so lets just say they were from all over the world.)

There's no menu and things do change a little from time to time again. These were what my friend and I bought: a Grapefruit Orange Juice ($7), a Cappuccino ($5.50), an Orange Croissant ($3.80), a Kouign Anan ($4) and a Brioche-Apple Raisin ($4.20). The bill totaled to about $24.50.

Cappuchino:

  • The foam was not thick enough for my friend.
  • The coffee's medium bodied, you can definitely taste the coffee beans
  • As much as the foam wasn't well done, I gotta say that the coffee tasted good. (But my friend still felt that it could have been done better)

Grapefruit Orange Juice:

  • $7 is a ridiculous sum to pay for a cup of juice this size anywhere unless you're in hotel's restaurant where they charge you unreasonably high prices for drinks. Had I known this was the price I'd be paying for, trust me, it would have not been bought. (Cognitive Dissonance at it's very best!)
  • But let's be objective, I like the combination. It's not too sweet. It's the kind of healthy drink you wanna be getting in the morning to up your Vitamin C count.
  • The juice was freshly squashed.

Orange Croissant:

  • I am not a huge Croissant fan to start with. But yet, I tried it for I am told time and time again that the Croissant here is to die for. After trying it, I am here to tell you: Yes. Get. It.
  • It was soft and fluffy but yet full of volume. You don't essentially feel like you are eating air when you are biting it. (Unlike some Croissants)
  • It was also not as buttery as I expected. Which was good for me for I'm a fan of anything less buttery.
  • It came with little bits of caramelized orange. It wasn't much to be honest, but it gave the flavour and additional sweetness to the Croissant.
  • This was definitely worth every $3.80 we paid for.

Kouign Anan:
  • This is definitely a sweet treat to go for if you feel like eating something uber sweet.
  • It was glazed with melted brown sugar which gave it a unique bitter taste.
  • Since it was glazed, it made the pastry rather hard and crunchy. It's almost like eating the hard caramel itself!
  • It's a simple pastry but not something I'd be ordering again for I feel that it's not really worth the price tag of $4.

Brioche-Apple Raisin:
  • The bread's soft, fluffy and full of volume! And the size of it is really huge ass!
  • Personally, the crumble's really good!
  • I really loved how the raisins and the apple tasted so good together. There was definitely apple at every bite!
  • The apple was not too sweet as well which was good as the sweetness from the raisins was definitely enough!
  • This was perhaps my favourite for the day!

Overall, I think Tiong Bahru Bakery is a go to when you wanna have a good pastry breakfast. As much as I feel that it's an expensive affair, I reminded myself that they are also selling a brand, an image and an ambiance. Although it was just 3 pastries, I have to say that my friend and I were soooooooooooo full after we were done with it! So maybe it's worth the dollars spent!

Till the next post!

HIHIHIHI!!! MAY&FJ are back with a new review, this time round on French food. As you all know, French food requires an acquired taste. I (FJ) am still trying to find it in me, still finding. We went out with our University friends that day with an intention to try out the AWESOME Char Siew at 6A Keong Siak Road, but it was CLOSED on Sunday. Blur us! So we decided to settle for an alternative around that area as it was raining quite badly that day, hence we got ourselves into Taratata as they serve Sunday Brunch! We love Sunday Brunch~

When we stepped in, it was like we were in another world, away from the messy streets and the rain. It felt like a typical tiny French Restaurant we'd see in the movies with all the classic warm lights, pictures hanging on the walls featuring little bits of French/France and soothing jazz music filled the air. We gotta give them plus points for such an atmosphere.

We ordered a Eeuf Cocotte a la Ratatouille & et au Chorizo ($12), Classique Croissant Jambon Fromage Servi Chaud ($13), Croque Madame ($16) and Bechamel Champignons Jambon & Fromage ($12), a glass of French Apple Cider ($8) and a glass of White Wine House Pour ($10). The bill totaled to a $83.07. Here's their Sunday Brunch Menu and their Drinks Menu. You can refer to the rest of their menus here.

Eeuf Cocotte a la Ratatouille & et au Chorizo:

  • Oven-baked creamy eggs casserole with Ratatouille and Chorizo Sausages.
  • It had a tangy taste, very appetizing.
  • The egg was soooooooooooo good! The yolk was runny!
  • They had cheese in it.
  • They had many types of vegetables which is good for it makes you feel that it's a healthy dish. (But you'd know better sometimes)
  • It had this herbal sprinkles on it, it smelled sooooo good.
  • The bread was slightly hard, but once you dip it, it's fine.
  • The portion was just fine.
  • The whole combination was just great! I (FJ) would personally recommend this to you peeps to try!

Classique Croissant Jambon Fromage Servi Chaud:
  • Croissant filled with Ham and Gruyere Cheese.
  • The Croissant looked T-I-N-Y. Not something you wanna have if you're looking for a hearty Brunch.
  • It looked kinda charred too.
  • The cheese was good, so cheese lovers this is a to go!

Croque Madame:
  • Baked Ham & Gruyere Cheese Sandwich with Bechamel sauce topped with a Fried Egg.
  • IT had generous servings of Ham and Gruyere Cheese.
  • Sandwich was crispy.
  • It came with a PERFECT Sunny Side Up.

Bechamel Champignons Jambon & Fromage:
  • Morney, Mushrooms, Ham and Emmental
  • Cheese and cream makes the dish slightly salty.
  • The cream itself was rather thick.
  • The crepe itself was thin, so you'd mostly taste the cream and you'd get kinda sick of eating it after awhile.
  • The fillings in the crepe were fine.

Overall Advantage:
  • Atmosphere was great!
  • Staff were really nice and friendly. They take initiative to recommend you their dishes and advice you the best way to eat your food.
 (French Apple Cider)

(House Pour: White Wine)

Overall Disadvantage:
  • They go around with this basket of Croissants and ask if you'd like to have one. We were asked a couple of times and it got kinda irritating honestly.

Note:
  • Brunch ends at 1630pm and it is only available on Sunday.

We would say that Taratata Bistrot is a place to go if you'd wanna have a restaurant with a good ambiance to chill over wine and food. But not all dishes are really worth paying the money, so do give the menu a little more thought before you take your pick!
Have you ever been to Taratata Bistrot? If you do, do share your experiences with us!!! We'd love to hear from you!

Till next time lovelies!

POULET

Location: Bugis+ Level 4
How to get there: Bugis Mrt Station
Opening hours: 1130am - 2130pm
Contact number: 66816727

HI ALLLLLL~YES WE'RE BACK!!
Nopes, exams have not ended, May and I still have one more paper on Monday to go before we're done for prelims this time round! But my itchy fingers just could not resist typing an article and hence I am back once more! This time round with a French food review at Poulet with Joey ^^ (May wasn't feeling well that day and Joey and I were mugging in the library and decided on good food to reward ourselves for a good day's work)

So, what's so awesome about Poulet? I have heard it from Joey who had visited when she had an outing with her friends. she told me that food's there is reasonable and not bad. So we've decided to include it in our blog for a review!
We ordered: Sauteed Mushroom ($7.80), Oxtail ($15.80) and a French Onion Soup ($5.80); our bill came to a total of $34.60! That's about $17.30 between the both of us. Quite worth it! I have included the menu here. I have to really apologize for the pictures of the menu, the lighting was bad so no matter how I've tried to avoid the shadow, I just couldn't. Looks like I need a photography session with the pros :(

French Onion Soup:

  • Croutons and the soup matches perfectly.
  • It's very flavorful, good for an appetizer!
  • Caramelized onions provides the sweet taste in the soup, heavenly!
  • There are small mushroom bits in the soup, kinda little though.
  • But we felt that you'll be sick of the soup if you're having the whole bowl to yourself. We recommend a bowl for 2, just nice!

Sauteed Mushrooms:
  • Eggs were PERFECTLY poached. GOOD!
  • Mushrooms are q! So much better than the ones we had at Canopy~

Oxtail:
  • Meat's tender. It melts in your mouth!
  • They cooked it's ligament till tender too!
  • The fats melt in your mouth! MELT!!! (I had an excited friend)
  • The whole onion in the dish has a slight herbal taste! MMMMM~
  • Sauce has a tinge of red wine as stated in the menu~I like the taste of it! Plus, the sauce is THICK!

Advantage:

  • Prices are reasonable.
  • Staff members are polite.
Disadvantage:
  • The whole restaurant is slightly cramped.
  • We requested for warm water but got cold water instead. (They were very busy during dinner)
Note:
  • Service charge and GST applies.
  • The queue starts lining up at about 7pm! So better go early for make a reservation before that!
Overall, I would say that our experience in Poulet was a good one. We were three quarters full after the 3 dishes and went for a Cold Stone Apple Pie Ice Cream to fill in the dessert section in our stomachs. We were relatively happy kids by then.

Okay till next time people!

***Updates (30/05):
Hi all! This is an update on our experience at the newly open Poulet outlet at VIVO City. Today's experience clearly shows that a brand can only be similar in their taste of food for they follow a recipe, but the standard of food and service definitely differs for chefs and service staffs are different.

We ordered the same Sauteed Mushrooms today at the VIVO outlet and realized that their poached egg was two thirds hardboiled and one third poached-.- Imagine our unhappiness. So we kinda told the staff that the egg wasn't done properly nicely.

(As you can see, the only part that was liquid was just at the far end and the rest was just hard boiled egg)

The next thing we knew the staff got defensive and told us that poached eggs were supposedly a little watery only. Wells, since she was defensive we just let it go (I mean why would you wanna make a big hooha over a staff who was willing to defend blindly?) and since this was how Poulet VIVO outlet defined poached eggs we let it go. But we made it clear to her when we went out that the Bugis outlet served us perfectly poached eggs and that was when she went "Oh I see, if you had told me, I would have had it changed." Hi lady, we told you. You just didn't listen?

We're fine with you wanting to defend your brand, but you should have LISTENED. Not just open your mouth blindly without listening and then telling us to tell you accurately-.- This shows bad service standards and lack of EQ competence in staff (It's just her only, the rest of them, or so far those we encountered were fine. If the owner of this outlet is reading, maybe you can ask the staff to own up herself. I see no need to take down her name and broadcast it here).

I guess it was just our unlucky day to visit Poulet VIVO today, you guys should really keep a look out on their poached eggs in case you wish to order them.

Do you guys have similar experiences or perhaps just the opposite? No worries, we would love to hear them too!
